How Much Does SEO Cost UK Businesses? Real 2026 Pricing Data

UK businesses pay £500 to £2,000 a month for SEO. Local-only campaigns start around £300 a month, a single-channel agency retainer typically runs £1,000 to £3,500 a month, and competitive national campaigns go from £3,000 to £10,000+. One-off SEO audits cost roughly £500 to £3,000. These figures exclude VAT, which adds 20% if your provider is VAT-registered.
That's the short version. The longer version is more useful, because "how much does SEO cost UK" is one of those questions where most answers online are either a sales pitch or a recycled American statistic with a pound sign stuck on the front.
We went through the actual data: UK-specific pricing research, the most-cited global survey, UK job-market salary data, and the prices the handful of transparent UK agencies publish. Here's what it says, where each number comes from, and how to use it to judge a quote you've been given.
Where the Numbers Come From (and Why Most UK Guides Get Them Wrong)
Before the tables, a warning about sources, because it changes how you should read every SEO pricing article, including this one.
The most-quoted SEO pricing survey isn't a UK survey. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers worldwide and found an average agency retainer of $3,209 a month and a freelancer average of $1,348 (Ahrefs). Those are global figures in US dollars. Plenty of UK articles quote them as if they describe the British market. They don't. They're still useful for context, and we use them below, but they aren't a UK price list.
UK agencies rarely publish prices. In July 2026, the independent UK research publisher Whito checked the websites of the top five marketing agencies in ten UK cities. Of those 50 firms, 47 published no price anywhere, and only two published a complete price list . Several of the agencies that published no price had enquiry forms asking for your budget.
That's why UK SEO pricing data is thin, and why the ranges you see are wide. The UK-specific figures in this article come mainly from Whito's research, which aggregates UK agency rate cards, industry surveys, freelancer platform data and published prices. Where we use other sources, we say so.
UK SEO Cost at a Glance
| What you're buying | Typical UK cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Typical SMB SEO spend | £500 – £2,000/month | Whito, 2026 |
| Local-only SEO | From £300/month (£300 – £800 typical) | Whito, 2026 |
| Single-channel agency retainer (e.g. SEO) | £1,000 – £3,500/month | Whito, May 2026 |
| Competitive/national SEO | £3,000 – £10,000+/month | Whito, 2026 |
| One-off SEO audit | £500 – £3,000 | Whito, 2026 |
| Published SME agency retainers | £999 – £2,500/month + VAT | Whito, July 2026 |
| Global agency average (for context) | $3,209/month | Ahrefs, 439 providers |
Whito also reports that UK SEO pricing has risen 15 to 30% since 2024, which it attributes to AI search, stricter E-E-A-T expectations, and a wider scope of work. If a quote feels higher than what you paid a couple of years ago, that's the market, not necessarily a rip-off.
How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK by Provider Type?
Who you hire moves the price more than almost anything else. Whito's Q1 2026 breakdown of UK providers looks like this:
| Provider type | Monthly cost | Hourly rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior freelancer | £300 – £800 | £30 – £60 | Local SEO, simple sites |
| Experienced freelancer | £800 – £2,500 | £60 – £150 | SMBs, niche industries |
| Small agency | £1,000 – £3,000 | — | Most UK SMBs |
| Mid-size agency | £3,000 – £7,000 | — | Competitive industries, multi-location |
| Large / enterprise agency | £7,000 – £20,000+ | — | National brands, large ecommerce |
| SEO consultant (strategy only) | £500 – £2,000 | £100 – £250 | Audits, strategy, in-house team support |
Whito's view is that freelancers tend to cost 30 to 50% less than agencies for comparable work, and that below roughly £1,500 a month, a good freelancer is often the better investment. The trade-off is depth: an agency can put a developer, a writer and an outreach specialist on your account, which a single freelancer usually can't.
The global Ahrefs data points the same way. Agencies in that survey charged 138% more than freelancers on average, and providers with more than two years in business charged about 33% more than newer ones.
How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in the UK?
For most UK small businesses, a realistic budget is £500 to £1,500 a month if you serve a local or regional area, and £1,500 to £5,000 a month if you're a growth-stage B2B or professional services firm competing nationally.
Here's how Whito maps budget to business type:
| Business type | Monthly budget | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Local service business (plumbers, dentists, salons) | £300 – £800 | Google Business Profile, citations, geo-targeted pages |
| Local/regional business (shops, restaurants, trades) | £500 – £1,500 | Local SEO, basic on-page, content updates |
| Growth-stage SME (B2B, professional services) | £1,500 – £5,000 | Technical SEO, content strategy, link building, reporting |
| Ecommerce | £2,000 – £8,000 | Product pages, category structure, technical fixes |
| Mid-market / multi-location | £3,500 – £10,000 | Multi-location SEO, enterprise technical, content at scale |
| Enterprise / national brand | £10,000 – £25,000+ | Full strategy, dedicated team, international SEO |

Whito's separate retainer research makes a useful point for SMEs: £1,000 to £2,000 a month is the realistic starting point for meaningful agency work, and below that you're often getting templated output rather than strategy. It also suggests businesses turning over less than £100k should think carefully before committing to any retainer at all.
If you're a smaller business weighing up your options, our guide to SEO services for small businesses covers what the work involves and which parts you can realistically handle yourself.
What Does Each SEO Budget Actually Buy?
A price is meaningless without scope. This is roughly what each tier should include, based on Whito's UK benchmarks.
£300 – £800 a month: local and basic
You should expect Google Business Profile optimisation, local citation building, basic on-page work such as title tags and meta descriptions, and a monthly ranking report. Don't expect content creation, meaningful link building or a technical audit at this level. It suits a service business targeting one town.
£800 – £2,000 a month: growth
Everything above, plus keyword research, one or two optimised pieces of content a month, technical fixes (site speed, crawl errors, schema), some link building or outreach, and reporting that tells you what to do next. This is where most UK SMBs sit, and it only works if the provider prioritises ruthlessly rather than spreading a small budget across everything.
£2,000 – £5,000 a month: competitive
Full technical SEO audits and implementation, a content programme of four or more pieces a month, active link building and digital PR, competitor gap analysis, and a dedicated account manager. This is the level for national rankings or crowded sectors like legal, finance, and SaaS.
£5,000+ a month: enterprise or aggressive growth
A dedicated team (strategist, writers, developer, outreach), custom dashboards, content at scale, and multi-location or international strategy integrated with paid and CRM teams. It's justified when organic search is a primary revenue channel.
A simple test for any quote: ask what specifically ships in month two. If the answer is "ongoing optimisation", you don't yet know what you're buying.
UK SEO Pricing Models: Retainer, Project or Hourly?
Monthly retainers
Retainers dominate. In the Ahrefs survey, 78.2% of providers charge this way, compared with 48.9% using per-project pricing and 34.8% charging hourly (many use more than one). In the UK, Whito puts flat monthly retainers at £1,000 to £5,000 a month across marketing services, with hybrid "base plus performance" models at around £750 to £2,000 a month plus a variable element.
Retainers make sense because SEO compounds. The content and links from month three are still working in month twelve. It's the model behind our own monthly SEO services.
One-off SEO projects
For defined pieces of work, Whito lists these typical UK costs:
| Project | Typical UK cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| SEO audit | £500 – £3,000 | Technical, on-page and competitor analysis with a prioritised plan |
| Keyword research | £300 – £1,500 | Keyword list, volume and difficulty data, content mapping |
| Website migration | £1,000 – £5,000 | URL mapping, redirects, indexation monitoring |
| Penalty recovery | £2,000 – £10,000 | Link audit, disavow, reconsideration, monitoring |
| Content strategy | £1,000 – £3,000 | Topic clusters, calendar, briefs for 3 – 6 months |
| Local SEO setup | £250 – £800 | GBP optimisation, citations, review strategy |

An audit is a sensible first purchase if you're unsure whether ongoing SEO is worth it. A good one should tell you exactly what's broken and whether the opportunity justifies a retainer. Our website audit checklist shows what a useful audit covers.
If you're planning a rebuild, factor migration SEO into the budget from the start. Redirect mistakes during a website redesign are one of the most common causes of sudden traffic loss.
Hourly and day rates
Hourly pricing suits consulting, second opinions and specific problems. Whito's UK rates run from £30 – £60 an hour for junior freelancers to £100 – £250 for strategy consultants.
UK contractor job ads give another reference point. IT Jobs Watch recorded a median daily rate of £475 for SEO Specialist contracts in the six months to 6 January 2026 (IT Jobs Watch). Treat that figure cautiously: it's based on only four advertised rates.
What UK Agencies Actually Publish
Because so few UK agencies show prices, the handful that do are the closest thing to a public going rate. In Whito's 50-agency check:
- Republic Marketing (Birmingham) listed three tiers: £999, from £2,500 and from £4,500 a month, all plus VAT.
- Pxa Marketing (Cardiff) showed two example retainers at £1,500 and £2,500 a month.
- Our Agency (Leeds and Wakefield) gave "from" figures in its FAQ, including SEO from around £1,200 a month and audits from £450.
In a separate August 2026 check of UK agencies that do publish figures, Whito found SEO listed at £329.99 a month for two hours of work, and noted that most published prices are plus VAT. A £695 retainer, for example, is £834 once VAT is added.
That last point matters more than it seems. Always check whether a quote includes VAT, and always ask how many hours the fee buys. Whito found only 2 of the 13 price-publishing agencies said how many hours a month the money covered.
In-House SEO vs Agency: What Does Each Really Cost?
Hiring your own SEO manager can look cheaper than an agency until you add up the full cost.
Salary. Indeed puts the average UK SEO Manager salary at £37,847, based on 508 reported salaries (updated April 2026). London is much higher: IT Jobs Watch recorded a median of £75,000 in London job ads over the six months to 20 August 2026.
Employer National Insurance. Since April 2025, employers pay 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year. On a £37,847 salary, that's about £4,927 a year. On £75,000, it's £10,500. (Eligible employers can offset some of this through the Employment Allowance.)
The monthly maths:
| UK average SEO manager | London median SEO manager | |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | £37,847 | £75,000 |
| Employer NI (15% above £5,000) | £4,927 | £10,500 |
| Monthly cost before extras | ≈ £3,565 | ≈ £7,125 |
And that's before workplace pension contributions, recruitment fees, equipment, training and tools. Tools alone add up: Ahrefs' Lite plan, for example, is $129 a month, and most in-house SEOs need a crawler and rank tracker on top.
One in-house person also can't be a technical specialist, writer, developer and link builder at once. Agencies and freelancers spread those costs across clients. In-house makes most sense when you have enough ongoing work for a full-time role and can still budget for specialist support where needed.
What Pushes Your SEO Quote Up or Down?
Location of the agency. Whito gives a direct example: a retainer costing £2,000 a month from a Manchester agency might be £3,500 from a central London equivalent. Remote-first agencies often land in between.
Your industry's competition. A personal injury firm in London is competing with rivals spending heavily on SEO. A village bakery is competing with a few other bakeries. Legal, finance, insurance and SaaS are among the most expensive sectors to rank in. Specialist programmes such as B2B SEO, SaaS SEO and healthcare SEO are priced accordingly because the work is heavier.
The state of your website. If your site is slow or structurally broken, the first months go on fixing it before any growth happens. Platform matters too. WordPress SEO often starts with performance cleanup, while Shopify SEO and wider ecommerce SEO involve category structure and duplicate content at scale.
Content volume. A B2B SaaS company might need four to eight articles a month to build topical authority. A local electrician may only need a handful of well-built service pages. A clear SEO content strategy stops you from paying for content that doesn't serve a purpose.
Link building difficulty. Earning quality links is the most labour-intensive part of SEO. In some sectors, local listings are enough; in others, you need digital PR or data-led content. This is the core of off-page SEO, and it's often where cheap packages cut corners.
Geographic scope. One town costs far less than the whole UK. Multi-location businesses need separate pages, citations, and Google Business Profiles for each area.
AI search. Being cited in AI Overviews and assistant answers now shapes how pages need to be structured, which is part of why UK prices have risen. AEO services and GEO services extend traditional SEO rather than replace it. Our piece on building an AI SEO strategy explains what's actually changed.
Contract length. Whito notes that a 12-month contract can be 10 to 15% cheaper per month than a rolling one. The discount is worthless if the work is poor.
Is Cheap SEO Worth It?
Usually not, and the data explains why. Whito's view is that below £500 a month, no provider can realistically deliver technical optimisation, content and link building together, and that under £300 a month the work is typically automated, outsourced to a low-quality team or simply not done.
The real risk is damage. Cheap packages often rely on bulk directory submissions, spun content or bought links from private blog networks. If that triggers a penalty, recovery work is priced at £2,000 to £10,000 as a project, and Whito says it can take 6 to 18 months to resolve.
"Affordable" and "cheap" aren't the same thing. An affordable plan narrows the scope honestly: fewer keywords, less content, slower link building, but real work by someone accountable. That's a legitimate way to start.
Red flags to watch for:
- Guaranteed page-one rankings or results in 30 days
- 12-month lock-ins with no break clause
- No access to your own Google Search Console, Analytics or accounts
- Reports built on impressions and rankings, with nothing on leads or revenue
- Promises of hundreds of backlinks a month
- No clear list of monthly deliverables
How to Work Out Your Own SEO Budget
Instead of starting with "what do agencies charge?", start with what a customer is worth to you.
Here's a simple illustrative example (hypothetical numbers):
- A job is worth £1,500 to your business on average
- You close 1 in 4 qualified enquiries
- A £1,500/month SEO programme eventually brings in 8 extra qualified enquiries a month
- That's 2 extra jobs, or £3,000 in monthly revenue against £1,500 in cost
Early on, the numbers won't look like that. Whito cites 6 to 12 months for meaningful SEO results, with local SEO often faster at 3 to 6 months. But the content and links you pay for early keep working later, which is why the return improves over time. If you need leads next week, paid search is the faster tool while SEO builds. Our article on SEO as performance marketing covers how to connect SEO work to revenue so you can actually measure this.
Whito's rule of thumb is that total marketing spend often sits at 5 to 10% of revenue, with SEO as a portion of that rather than the whole budget.
How to Get an Honest SEO Quote
- Know your number first. Work out what a customer is worth and what you can afford to pay to win one.
- Don't lead with your budget. Ask for their standard rates for a defined scope instead.
- Get deliverables in writing. "Four hours of technical work and two articles a month" is a deliverable. "Ongoing optimisation" isn't.
- Ask about hours. How many, done by whom, and what happens to unused time.
- Check VAT. Is the figure plus VAT or inclusive?
- Check the exit. What's the minimum term and notice period?
- Confirm ownership. You should own your accounts, content and data if you leave.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?
Most UK businesses pay £500 to £2,000 a month. Local-only SEO starts from around £300, a single-channel agency retainer typically costs £1,000 to £3,500, and competitive national campaigns run £3,000 to £10,000 or more. Prices usually exclude VAT.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in the UK?
A small local business typically spends £300 to £1,500 a month. Whito's research suggests £1,000 to £2,000 a month is the realistic starting point for meaningful agency work, while a good freelancer can deliver solid value below that.
How much does an SEO audit cost in the UK?
A one-off SEO audit typically costs £500 to £3,000, depending on the size of the site and how deep the technical and competitor analysis goes.
What do UK SEO freelancers charge?
According to Whito's 2026 data, junior UK freelancers charge £300 to £800 a month (£30 to £60 an hour), and experienced freelancers charge £800 to £2,500 a month (£60 to £150 an hour).
Is SEO more expensive in London?
Generally, yes. Whito gives the example of a retainer that costs £2,000 a month from a Manchester agency costing around £3,500 from a central London agency. London SEO salaries are also well above the UK average.
Why don't UK SEO agencies show their prices?
Most say every project is bespoke, and scope genuinely varies. But in Whito's July 2026 check, 47 of 50 UK agencies published no price at all, which leaves buyers without a benchmark. Asking for a written scope with hours and deliverables is the best way to compare quotes.
Has SEO become more expensive in the UK?
Yes. Whito reports UK SEO pricing has risen 15 to 30% since 2024, and that marketing agency retainers overall are up more than 30% on 2023.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Whito puts meaningful results at 6 to 12 months, with local SEO often showing movement in 3 to 6 months. Anyone promising page-one rankings within 30 days is a red flag.
Is it cheaper to hire an in-house SEO?
Not always. At the UK average SEO manager salary of £37,847, salary plus employer National Insurance comes to roughly £3,565 a month before pension, tools, and recruitment costs. That's comparable to a mid-range agency retainer, but you get one person rather than a team.
